Rewind to 2019 before the coronavirus. Every year for the past 5 years during teaching I have had a bad cough which lasted for weeks on end. I tried many things from flu shots to vitamins and nothing seemed to help. During the 2019-2020 school year, I borrowed an air purifier from my in-laws to see if this would help. I placed it in the classroom, and it immediately starting zapping away (the way this one worked it actually zapped large particulate matter in the air). It literally made a zapping sound for the first 30 minutes that I put it on. My students asked what it was and I told them it was germ-zapping machine. They loved it and found it quite amusing!
To my pleasant surprise, that year I did not get that pestering cold and cough which made my life miserable for weeks on end and always seemed to come back for more. I was in love with this newfound gadget. It made me wonder if I should look into purchasing a bigger and better model to combat germs.
So I started doing some research on air purifiers to see if they had any additional benefits in the classroom. I found a very interesting article entitled, “Installing Air Filters in Classrooms Has Surprisingly Large Educational Benefits.” Click here to read this article.
Then the coronavirus hit and I was even more determined to obtain a machine to help filter the air in my room. The question I was looking into was, “Will air purifiers help to capture this menace?” The answer is a bit tricky. After a great deal of research, I found that air purifiers do in fact capture the coronavirus particles.
In the end, I was intent on buying a new air purifier. Some of the areas you will want to focus on when purchasing one are:
-CFM: The larger the CFM the better, and this correlates to room size. This is a measurement of how quickly it will circulate the air in a room.
-Room size: I wanted a larger one which would clean the air more often.
-Filter types: I wanted one with a carbon filter to clear VOC in the air, especially since they will be cleaning more.
-Cost: Air purifiers that are large enough to work efficiently in classrooms range from $200-$800.
With all those considerations I decided upon this one after long hours of research and my husband’s help, who is awesome (he may or may not have helped me write this article, lol!)
I chose this one because it had really good ratings on many sites, and it was very cost effective. It is able to cover a large area and had great results in scientific reviews.

If you are someone who gets sick a lot during the school year like me, I definitely suggest that you consider purchasing an air purifier for your classroom. It’s an investment in your health and the health of your students. You will not be disappointed!
