I don’t know about you, but when I graduated from college with my teaching degree, I was not at all prepared to teach guided reading groups. I literally did not have one course on this very useful and necessary teaching method.
Last summer, I purchased The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading: An Assess-Decide-Guide Framework for Supporting Every Reader. It is hands-down the best book I have ever read on how to teach guided reading groups.
Jan Richardson, Ph.D. and educational consultant, lays out exactly what you need to do to help all readers at different levels improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and writing. She even has videos modeling how to teach different strategies.
I have been using her techniques and lesson plans all year, and my students have shown tremendous growth in their reading fluency. I would recommend this book not only for novice teachers but seasoned teachers as well. The tips and strategies that she gives are easy to implement and truly help differentiate instruction for all students.
